In 1910 Director D. W. Griffith was the first to make a motion picture in Hollywood. It was a seventeen minute short film titled, In Old California.
The 1920’s were when the movie industry began to truly flourish, along with the birth of the “movie star”. With hundreds of movies being made each year, Hollywood was the rise of an American force. Hollywood alone was considered a cultural icon set apart from the rest of Los Angeles, emphasizing leisure, luxury, and a growing “party scene”.
The 1930’s is considered the Golden Age of Hollywood. Technological advances brought sound into film, creating new genres and greatly improving the viewer experience.
Post Pearl Harbor the early 1940’s were a tough time for the American film industry; but again, advances in special effects, better sound recording quality, and the beginning of color film use made movie-going even more enjoyable.
From one adobe hut in 1853 to a 2000 census population of roughly 22,193 people per square mile, Hollywood has become the entertainment capital of the world.
The Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
